Just read about the tragic tree pruning border incident on the Israel-Lebanon border in The Independent (4/8/10). Apparently the Israel forces began pruning a tree in 'no man's territory' as it obscured their CCTV view of the Lebanon border. The Lebanon forces did not like the 'infringement' and the Israeli forces did not like the warning shots. The border is one of the hottest areas in the world regarding potential conflict and the incident sadly ended with five dead, including a journalist, with both sides having to explain the incident to grieving loved ones.

The best way to motivate our team is to hear from what our customers think of us. The good and the bad things will assist us in providing you, our customers, an excellent service. Ideally we would appreciate written comments as we show the team feedback and pin it to our notice board.

We currently rate our own feedback on our site and all our customers need to do is email us their feedback (info@caseytreecare.co.uk) and rate our service from one (poor) to five (excellent).

The public sector budget was always going to be under the spot light no matter what government was elected. Consequently one area that is likely to be effected is our public parks and street landscaping budgets as this is generally an easy target for most financial directors. However, all is not lost as I have been impressed how some of the UK's biggest facility management companies like Carillion, Balfour Beattie and Mitie are driving value from public and private sector facility budgets without any serious effect on quality.

I was recently reading the Metro (14 Apr 10) about the HANDYMAN who recently fell 14 feet after leaning his ladder against the tree branch he was sawing off - and now he is suing his bosses !!! How can you sue for an obvious mistake??? However, that is exactly what Egerton House Hotel in Bolton is facing after magistrates fined the hotel £1,000 and ordered to pay £1,000 court costs for failing to carry out a risk assessment. Apparently, Mr Peter Aspinall, 64, broke his heel and damaged his ligaments while pruning the tree with another man at the hotel.

The cost of cutting a tree in a professional manner may seem expensive, but getting it wrong by using a ‘bogus’ tree surgeon could cost you more than money. There are many good articles on this subject, but the one from www.tree-care.info is a good one which is summarised below…..

Why choose a professional Arborist?

Tree work is a dangerous and highly skilled operation. Choosing an arborist or tree surgeon is something that must be done with great care if disaster is to be avoided.
Picking the wrong arborist could lead to:
• Injury to people,
• Damage to property,

Last Autumn the garden should have been cleared of debris and green waste and so you can now enjoy the site of Spring bulbs and flowers. If not it is still not too late for a quick clearance so that the scene is set for an enjoyable Spring.

Key tips:

1. Only plant your bedding flowers when you are sure that the frosty nights are over (saves money)
2. Do any additional weeding now when their growth rate is stunted (saves time later on)
3. Plan your major garden jobs over the weekend in two hour sessions (then have a cup of tea)

Merry Christmas everyone and we hope you have a prosperous new year!!!

As part of our Green agenda we will not be sending Christmas cards to our customers or partners, but will put this money aside to buy more Rainforest in the Amazon via 'Sponsor A Tree' organisation. In know what your thinking, we're just being a tight Scottish Scrooge... but I promise you that we will buy more Rainforest.

Having read Prince Charles' stark warning that we have just '100 months to act' on global warming (Metro 13 March 09), we have decided to become carbon balanced via The World Land Trust in order to protect the Rainforests and re-plant new forests in the UK. We understand that offsetting carbon emissions is not enough on it's own and have introduced a new environmental policy to tackle the serious issue of our carbon footprint. If you would like to know more about what you can do to protect the environment, please contact us for more information.

Sandra White, MSP, invited me to a meeting to discuss the main issues concerning SMEs in the current economic climate. I informed Sandra that now is not the time to abandon green initiaives and she was supportive to my vision and plans to reduce the amount of wood going to landfill sites. Did you know that “about 85% of waste wood in the UK goes to landfill.. from building firms to local councils, organisations dump around 8.5m tons of wood into holes in the ground every year” according to The Sunday Times (9 Nov 08, Section 3 Business, Recycling sees the big picture pp IV).

Just read in the free daily newspaper Metro (1 Oct 08) about a Mr Stirling (59), of Peacehaven in East Sussex, who slipped while cutting branches in a tree and lopped his arm off. Luckily for him his neighbour dialled 999, found the arm and put it into a bag of frozen sausage rolls. The hospital staff managed to reattach the arm and Mr Stirling is doing well. Mr Stirling is a lucky guy, but the healing process will take years and I’m no doubt he will leave tree pruning to professional tree care firms from now on.This incident has inspired me to give out free tree cutting advice.
