As Scotland took the full force of the recent gales, tree surgeons across the country have been working hard to keep roads, rail and airports open. In most cases it is advisable to have a number of written quotes before instructing the tree surgeon to undertake the work. However, when it comes to dangerous trees that are a hazard to people and property, work should be undertaken immediately. I've heard of some insurance companies not willing to accept a claim for dangerous trees that have not caused damage so far.

As Scotland gets battered by high winds it is prudent to remind you that the Courts are awarding substantial damages due to accidents concerning falling trees and branches. The Courts recognise that property owners have a Duty of Care to the general public regarding health and safety.

As you may know Scotland is going to get battered with 70 mph winds over the next few days which means we all need to be extra vigilant regarding tree damage. People with trees in their gardens have a duty of care to the general public regarding safety. Therefore, if your tree is damaged and you would like some advice on what to do, call our emergency number on 07961 020 988 and we will do everything possible to secure your property's safety.

Just when you thought it was safe to do some gentle pruning around the garden, up comes another news article telling you how a poor man had the misfortune to fall on his own pruning shears and impales his head.

Yes, gardens are a dangerous place when you have sharp tools around and have a lapse of concentration. We have all read stories of people falling from trees or cutting their arms off with chainsaws. Sometimes it is just sheer stupidity, but others it is a sad case of people just having a moment's lapse of concentration and then.... bang ..... straight to hospital.

According to the BBC 300,000 people attended Accident and Emergency departments in the UK due to accidents in the garden. As we all try and struggle through the Winter snap, not many people will know or care much about the National Tree Week (Nov 27 - Dec 5th). The Tree Council, The Woodland Trust and Defra had planned an awareness campaign to encourage the public to plant more trees as the UK is near the bottom of the league when it comes to woodland cover. According to The Tree Council's director general Pauline Buchanan Black (Metro 24 Nov 10) ''Areas where there are more trees have less crime, better health and cleaner air, and higher property values''.
